Try making a non-replica copy of the database, and try the deletion in the replica. If it succeeds, then your crash might be related to the buildup of deletion stubs in the production database, and perhaps you can change your purge interval setting to work around it. Or perhaps you can just replace your production database with the copy.
If it doesn't work, then back to the drawing board.
